A piezoelectric accelerometer is a mechanical assembly consisting of a number of piezoelectric forms (discs, squares or rectangles) and a seismic mass; it is fundamentally a mass spring system with a high resonant frequency. The piezoelectric material produces an electric output when pressure is applied or, conversely, changes its dimensions when an electrical signal is applied. An accelerometer uses this piezoelectric effect to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Such a system can be used in the longitudinal axis if it is a compression mode sensor or in the transverse axis if it is a shear mode sensor. A patented push-pull system combines the advantages of both the shear and compression mode accelerometers.
